Has this ever happened to you?

You find yourself charged with preparing materials for an upcoming event. Maybe you are preparing to deliver a big presentation. Maybe you are developing social media shares leading up to an important event. Maybe you are planning and executing a training session or meeting. Or, maybe you are creating a printed work, intended to provide important information to a particular audience. You spend hours preparing only to find that upon sharing the work, your audience does not engage with you or your message. You notice those in front of you live or on Zoom are not paying attention. You realize those social media posts have no interactions or impressions. Or, people do not seem to have any knowledge of the information you sent out.

Experiencing this lack of engagement is not only frustrating, but it also hinders the ability to provide clear and concise information critical to the goals and processes of your institution. By placing a strategic focus on messaging, both in content and visual presentation, school leaders can increase the way stakeholders engage. This can have a direct impact on the success of the individuals sharing the information and on the institution as a whole. There is a strategy to preparing and presenting engaging content. Design processes and timing are just a couple of the elements that need to be thoughtfully considered to maximize the impact of messaging. I have heard folks say that how the work looks is not important; the audience only cares about content. I could not disagree more. Our brains are wired to gravitate toward visually appealing and thoughtfully formatted design. Additionally, our habits impact how and when we are most likely to consume information, making decisions regarding the time and method of sharing so important.

There is an art to preparing and sharing materials and experiences that engage. I like to think of myself as an engagement artist, blending the necessary elements into a given work, based on the medium by which the information is being shared. Communications services offered by UpgradeED focus on capturing the attention of your audience, be it students, staff, or community members. Reach out for assistance with strategy and the preparation of materials focused on print and human engagement.
